The state of Florida has made headlines this summer as the state with the highest number of confirmed Zika virus cases. While South Florida is bearing the brunt of the virus, cases have appeared throughout the state, including with the St. Johns County area. Unfortunately, Zika is not the only insect-borne illness plaguing the region. Without protection people may be at risk during any time spent outdoors.
What Are the Risks of Vector-Borne Disease?
Disease transmitted by living organisms, such as mosquitoes and ticks, is known as vector-borne disease. This group of illnesses can be either viral or parasitic and includes Zika, Chikungunya, West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease and others. Zika often causes flu-like symptoms including fever and joint pain and poses a serious risk to pregnant women due to its effect on unborn children. Lyme disease, transmitted by ticks, produces similar symptoms in the early stages and often causes a distinctive, bullseye-shaped rash. Untreated, it can cause facial paralysis, nerve pain, irregular heartbeat, and short-term memory loss. It can even be fatal in pets.
What Can I Do About It?
The best form of protection is prevention. Recommended measures include eliminating all sources of standing water and covering your skin when spending time outdoors. Our barrier control methods, including our automatic misting system, offer an additional layer of protection by eliminating mosquitoes and adult ticks on contact. The automatic misting system is recommended for people living in high-risk areas, including the Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra areas, which is home to 38 known species of native and invasive mosquitoes. This preventive measure helps control vector populations by breaking the insect life cycle, making your yard a safer place for the whole family.
The process is simple and requires no maintenance from you. We’ll install the automatic misting system throughout your property, which will release a controlled amount of barrier treatment up to four times per day. There’s even a remote control option so you can distribute more or less treatment as needed. We’ll refill, service, and winterize your system right on schedule.
